BACK TO SCHOOL 2021 Information for RMC Families
May 14, 2020

It is an honour to acknowledge a staff member for their 20 years of service and this year we congratulate Mr Derek Austin. Twenty years of service is a rare achievement in this day and age and it requires of the individual those golden qualities of adaptability, acceptance and perseverance.  Mr Austin demonstrates these qualities in spades.  The last twenty years have seen dramatic changes in the education sector – from how we teachers deliver the syllabus, to how we guide and assist our students to learn and become good and caring citizens of the world.  Derek has responded to these changes with a quiet confidence and a desire to keep learning new things himself.

If there is one phrase that describes Mr Austin, it’s ‘old school’. Old school manners and old school hard work. Mr Austin is a gentleman. He is helpful, kind and hardworking. Mr Austin comes from a time when work meant rolling up your sleeves and diving in with two hands and dive into Rivermount College he did. Having worked in the TAFE system in South Africa, Mr Austin came to Rivermount College with a lot of experience and practical know-how. A proud military man, Mr Austin is very disciplined and when interviewed by the founding Principal, Mr Colin Young, Mr Austin was impressed with his discipline, philosophy and fairness.

Mr Austin has taught a variety of subjects at Rivermount College during his 20-year tenure and primarily this has been Design and Technology in the Secondary School.  With an inquisitive mind and a temperament for teaching, Mr Austin is at home in the classroom. He is well known and fondly remembered by past and present students which is very clear by the many that come back and see him.

Derek’s enduring commitment to his Pastoral Care classes, his dependable leadership on school camps and his finesse at managing sporting teams, especially Girls Volleyball, is greatly acknowledged and appreciated by his co-workers, parents and above all students. Mr Austin, thank you for your long and very valuable service to the Rivermount College community.
