Heidi Young began her employment at the College in 2010, joining as one of our now many previous students who have returned to us as staff members. Since Heidi began as Library Technician she has grown professionally to now serve as Library Coordinator. Indeed, she is an integral part of the Hank Young Library, including overseeing the day-to-day running of the library, supporting teachers in the acquisition and development of teaching and learning resources, and providing assistance to those looking to utilise library resources. She also works towards maintenance of the Hank Young Foundation charitable trust’s online resource library of resources, of benefit to both the College and wider community.

In her weekly library lessons with Years 3 to 6 students, Miss Heidi as she is affectionately known, supports students’ success by guiding them in reading for understanding, exposure to a diversity of viewpoints and genres, and for the simple pleasure of reading. Through her engaging lessons these students learn, amongst other things, the Dewey system to help with library usage and, in Year 6, online research skills.

As a College, we thank her for her work in planning and designing the resources for the Primary School library program and for her development of a culture of reading, which has a positive impact on student literacy and learning outcomes. Through this work, Heidi’s respect for social justice and the pastoral care of students have shone through, with students reporting that as she makes learning fun by encouraging group work and regularly changing things up.

Over the years, there have been many opportunities for Heidi to share her fun side, including through Book Week dress-ups and her regular appearance in costume as a reading mascot. Heidi loves to be in amongst it with the Primary School students in particular, which is seen not only in their regular library lessons but her work during each year’s highly anticipated Book Fair, the success of which ultimately generates future library book purchases.

Miss Heidi is a much loved and respected staff member, often working behind the scenes (or in costume). Her passion for the College has continued to grow through her years as a student and as a staff member in the Library. We acknowledge and thank Heidi for her wonderful contributions over the past 10 years.
