Ellie Leneham Throws Her Way to International Success

Following her previous achievements on the athletics track and field, Year 9 student Ellie Leneham has continued to make her mark on the international stage this year, recently returning from Canada with an impressive haul of medals and a new personal best!

The 14-year-old was invited to compete at two international competitions: the Jack Brown Memorial Meet in Vancouver and the 2026 British Columbia Championships in Coquitlam. Competing in the Under 16 Women’s Hammer Throw and Shot Put, Ellie enjoyed outstanding results across both competitions.

At the Jack Brown Memorial event, Ellie claimed gold in the Hammer Throw and silver in her Shot Put event. She backed up that performance at the British Columbia Championships, winning the Under 16 Hammer Throw with a new personal best of 49.82 metres, and placed sixth in Shot Put.

Ellie’s sporting journey began in Little Athletics, where she competed mainly in Discus and Javelin. However, she discovered a passion for Hammer Throw shortly thereafter and at 10 years old, she joined coach Matthew Symonds’ squad, beginning a partnership that has helped drive her continued success.

Training alongside teammates competing at national and international level has inspired Ellie to keep striving towards her own goals. She currently dreams of one day representing Australia in the green and gold.

With seven Queensland representative selections, six national medals and three international medals already to her name, Ellie is now setting her sights on the 2026 Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Perth this December.
