From classroom to command: a Rivermount story of success

Lieutenant Commander Monica Tabulo, Rivermount College 2005 Alumnus, has built a remarkable career in the Royal Australian Navy, drawing on the values of dedication, leadership, and continuous growth fostered during her time at Rivermount.

At the age of 14, Monica set her sights on becoming a Weapons Electrical Engineering Officer in the Navy. It was Monica’s ambition that shaped her choices and commitment, guiding her through her schooling and beyond. After graduating from Rivermount, she entered the Australian Naval Academy in 2007 and embarked on an intensive journey of training, study, and service.

With shore and sea postings across the globe, Monica has played a crucial role in regional security operations, including anti-piracy missions off the coast of Somalia, helping ensure the safety of international shipping routes. In 2013, she completed her first deployment abroad on HMAS Melbourne in explosive ordnance. By 2017, Monica was serving as Deputy Weapons Electrical Engineering Officer on HMAS Parramatta, throughout Indonesia, Korea, and the Pacific.

In 2019, Monica earned the Weapons Electrical Engineering Charge Qualification, formally recognising her readiness to serve as Head of Department and as second to the CEO. An achievement that marked a significant milestone in her career.

Monica recently returned to Rivermount to speak with our Senior Secondary students, sharing powerful advice rooted in her own experiences. She reminded students that they are the masters of their own destiny, encouraging them to find their passion, embrace challenges, and focus on what truly matters.

As Monica celebrates 20 years since graduation, her journey stands as an inspiring example of how Rivermount College helps shape confident, capable leaders ready to serve with purpose and integrity.
