Michael Dummer is Hitting all the Right Notes at State Level Drumming!

Year 10 student Michael Dummer has secured a place in the Queensland State Final of the Oz Schools Instrumental Championships (OSIC). Michael’s incredible audition wowed the judges, who credited his skills and passion for music with glowing feedback. The prestigious event will be held on Saturday 30 August 2025 at the State Library of Queensland, where the top 20 students in each category will compete for accolades and the chance to advance to the National Finals.

Michael discovered his interest in drumming just over four years ago, after being inspired by a performance from two talented musicians at Rivermount College.

“They were playing a heavy piece, and that sparked my whole journey. The interesting sound and its difficulty to play were encouraging. It gave me the motivation for the type of music that I also wanted to play.”

Adding a layer of challenge, Michael’s left-handed drumming often requires rearranging the drum kit for his performances. While it frequently sparks a few light-hearted jokes, Michael takes it all in his stride and continues to shine on stage.

At the State Finals, Michael will perform sections from two of his favourite songs, “Pneuma” by TOOL and “Karma” by Parkway Drive. Both pieces reflect his unique, high-energy style and fondness for heavier music genres.

Michael credits his parents for their unwavering support, and names Ben Gordon, the drummer for Parkway Drive, as his most considerable professional influence.

“As soon as I heard the band, I loved the way he played,” Michael says.

The band’s hard work ethic and persona on stage also inspire Michael to keep working hard.

“I really enjoy how they present themselves for the type of music they play. They are best friends making music and are enjoying their journey together”.

At only 15 years of age, Michael has already learnt the value of camaraderie within the industry, which will undoubtedly support him into the future. Commenting on his participation at the upcoming finals, he says that he looks forward to sharing the stage with his opponents.

“I am very happy to be among the group, but importantly for me, it’s also about meeting the people who are there. I enjoy connecting with people who share similar goals, discussing their journeys and what the future holds for them.

It would mean so much if I were to secure a place in the National Final. Gaining a spot would be a fantastic reward for all the hours I dedicate to perfecting my skills. I practice playing every day where possible, even if I don’t feel like it.”

Michael says that drumming is an emotive art form, and he hopes to pursue a professional career in the future.

“I will always love playing drums, and when I play, it brings out multiple emotions and feelings that I can’t describe. It is what I want to pursue for the rest of my life.”

His advice to aspiring musicians is simple, yet powerful.

“Never give up. The rewards come from hard work and practice, even when you don’t feel like it. Push through the challenges, that’s how you get to the next level.”

After completing his Grade 4 assessment last year, Michael is also currently working closely with his drum teacher, Jasper, to prepare for his Trinity College London Grade 8 assessment, the highest level achievable.

We wish Michael the very best of luck as he steps onto the State Final stage! This is an outstanding opportunity to highlight his exceptional talent, and we’re excited to watch his musical journey unfold.
